Garland Quek
Hi there, welcome to my online photography portfolio. What started as a hobby years ago - telling stories through my blog on Exposure - soon became my passion. So I took a leap of faith. After seven years of working in finance, I quit my job to pursue my real passion of documenting places, capturing moments, and telling stories through photography. Over the years, I’ve developed a keen eye for composition & setting, incorporating elements of nature, the environment, & atmosphere into every image I create. This is where I share glimpses of the places I visit and the people I meet during my travels and at home. I’m also blessed to have turned this passion into a business, one in which I have the opportunity to capture life’s precious moments for clients. I'm here to capture your special occasions, the details of a significant day, the fleeting and intimate. If you're interested in booking a service or shoot, I'd love to chat so please drop a message. Thank you for visiting.
FAQ
Q: Where are you based?
After over a decade in this city, I can honestly call myself a New Yorker now. The distinct neighborhoods, the towering skyscrapers, the lights and streets, the convergence of cultures and people - all of it never ceases to amaze and inspire me.
Q: What inspires your photography?
Quietness, stillness, the fleeting, the intimate, expressions of joy. My goal is to capture one, some, or all of these elements in a photo. My philosophy with photography is to invoke feelings of nostalgia, adventure, & connection, and ultimately to tell a story.
Q: How would you describe your style?
Natural, introspective, journalistic. I started off telling stories and I will always aim to remain faithful to that in my work. However, it really depends on what and where I'm shooting. When it comes to people, I absolutely enjoy capturing the split-second, fleeting moments found in natural interactions. I see it as a fun challenge. That often results in candid, spontaneous, and intimate photos. When it comes to travel and landscape, I enjoy capturing the feeling of freedom and quietness, of feeling small in a big place - but still being perfectly at peace with it.
Q: Do you edit all photos yourself?
Yes, every photo delivered to you is hand-edited by me until the perfectionist in me feels it has achieved the desired look and feel.
Q: How far are you willing to travel?
I think my tagline should say it all, but as an adventurer, there's no place too far. I thrive in new environments and absolutely love being on the road. So whether it be a destination wedding, a faraway elopement, or a special occasion across the country, I'm happy to journey there for you.
Q: How do you deliver?
The most common delivery method in this digital age is through online galleries. You will receive your finished, high-quality photos via a link to a photo storage medium such as Dropbox, which can be shared with friends and family. If you prefer another method of delivery, such as a flash drive or DVD, that can also be arranged. Prints can also be made as an additional service.
Q: What is your pricing?
Good question. I'll just go ahead and say it, pricing is a delicate topic when it comes to photography. On the one hand, I understand that there's a whole lot of subjectivity and nuances when it comes to valuing an image - what one person likes isn't necessarily what someone else will. On the other, I recognize that, objectively, I have a certain eye for aesthetics and style that appeals to people (at least some percentage) and that's what clients hire me for. So, my approach is to place the emphasis on what matters most: the photos. Thus, I've landed on a pricing model with parameters such as volume, shooting time, and scale factored in. This results in a range and balance for both you and me.
With that said, I'm happy to work with clients on custom solutions. Just send me a message with some details about your shoot.
Q: What is your turnaround time?
This can vary greatly from project to project. While some less demanding shoots may only require a few weeks to deliver final photos, others may require several months. Whatever the timeline, you can count on me to give you consistent updates on the progress of your photos.
Q: How do we book you?
If possible, I like to meet or at least chat with clients prior to shoots. It is an opportunity for us to get to know one another, and I can get a sense of what your expectations are for the photos and the direction you want. Once we get to know each other and feel comfortable moving forward together, the next step will be a retainer deposit, which is refundable up to one week before the shoot, guaranteeing your shoot date. After that, I'm all yours.
